Midpoint Formula

    The midpoint is found by bisecting (cutting in half) the distance between the two points that are given. The midpoint formula

gives you the coordinates of the midpoint. This formula comes from finding the distance of the line and then dividing this figure by two. To find this point you must use the steps that follow in the next paragraph.



    Figure 1.4 shows a visual representation of what happens in the midpoint formula. This formula starts by finding the distance between the x1 and x2 coordinates (a horizontal line) and the y1 and y2 coordinates (a vertical line).

    From here we find the middle of the vertical lines by adding the starting and ending x coordinates together and then divide this sum by two, and then repeat this step for the y coordinates to find the midpoint of the vertical lines.

    In finding the middle values of the individual lines the midpoint coordinates (x,y) have been found also.
